134 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

All of this points up what can be accomplished through a unity of
purpose, and it also illustrates that you can't obtain an important
new industry merely by extending an invitation.

Mr. Firestone, we welcome your company to Maryland and we hope
you will enjoy many happy and prosperous years here.

LETTER ON CRIME AND SOCIAL CONCERN
April 4, 1967

Reverend Roy E. Carnahan
Pastor

First Church of the Nazarene

4301 Woodridge Road
Baltimore, Maryland 21229
Dear Mr. Carnahan:

Thank you for your invitation to attend a service during the April
9-16 period when you will be emphasizing the church's spiritual min-
istry as a deterrent to crime. Unfortunately, my schedule will not
permit my personal attendance, but I would like to commend you
and the congregation of The First Church of the Nazarene for the
attention you are giving to this grave social problem of our day.

Crime and lawlessness on the streets are indeed a matter for Chris-
tian social concern. The strongest laws we can pass and the strongest
police protection we can muster will not solve this problem without
an accompanying improvement of the moral fiber in our society.

It is in the home and in the church and in the school that we form
our ideas of right and wrong, and where we learn to live by the Gold-
en Rule or the rule of disregard for our fellowman. The church can
be an extremely important instrument in shaping our lives, whatever

the environment may be at home-
By teaching and practicing and witnessing to the Christian ethic
we can influence the lives and behavior of those around us.

I join you in your prayers for a meaningful solution to this prob-
lem, and to others that prevent our society from being what we know
it can and ought to be.
