may signify a lasting peace. And finally, let us dedicate ourselves to
that true patriotism which is loving one's country, respecting its tra-
ditions and honoring its people, high or low, rich or poor.

May we, as true patriots, stand firm and unselfish for the rights,
for the common good, for the peace and well-being of all, sacrificing
self, if need be, and unafraid of all opposition. On this Veterans Day,
1965, let us express our gratitude to Almighty God for this Nation
and for the principles of freedom and justice upon which it was
founded. And let us renew our pledge that we will make any sacri-
fice we may be called upon to make to sustain our government, our
freedom and our American way of life.

ADDRESS, NATIONAL FLAG WEEK CEREMONIES

"U. S. S. FRIGATE CONSTELLATION"

June 13, 1965

Mr. Stick, Admiral Burke, members of the Star Spangled Banner
Flaghouse Association, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

We have met here today to pay reverence to a symbol — the flag
of the United States under which Americans for nearly two centuries
have rallied in the cause of freedom and justice. As the Governor of
the State, its was my privilege again this year to proclaim Flag Week
in Maryland — the week beginning today. In the proclamation, I
noted that this starry flag is the emblem of our unity as a free people
and a symbol of our determination to remain free. I noted also that
the purpose of the observance is to awaken in the consciousness of
Americans an awareness of the great principles upon which our Nation
was founded: The principles of freedom, justice and equality of
the law.

I would encourage all Marylanders to observe this occasion with
proper ceremony and respect to this emblem and this symbol. Wood-
row Wilson had this to say about our flag: "The things the flag
stands for, " he said, " were created by the experiences of a great
people. Everything it stands for was written by their lives. The flag
is the embodiment, not of sentiment but of history. It represents the
experiences made by men and women, the experiences of those who
do and live under the flag. "

The flag, then, is of significance to all Americans in that it em-
