the mature responsible drivers who made our highways safe places to
travel. By attending this conference, you have shown your interest and
deep concern with this problem. You have demonstrated your respon-
sibility and your obligation as the future leaders of our State to find a
remedy for the malady which plagues us. I plead with you not to let
your obligation cease with the adjournment of this Conference. Take
what you have learned here back to your homes and schools. Set ex-
amples as conscientious, informed drivers and influence others to do like-
wise. For you are the ones who will inherit the highways and
throughfares of tomorrow. The adults of our times have left you a legacy
of death and despair on our public roads. It is now up to you to either
conquer or fall prey to it.

safety disaster—highway accidents.

I am sure you all have read accounts of the natural disasters which
have struck our country during the past year, taking countless lives,
destroying millions of dollars worth of property and leaving many people
alone and homeless. These disasters occurred in Louisiana during last
fall's hurricane, in the Midwest during the winter snowstorms and en-
suing floods and through the country wherever tornadoes desolated
communities. These, of course, were terrible catastrophes and their toll
of death and destruction was shocking. But I wonder if you realize that
