REMARKS, NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL
AWARDS LUNCHEON
BALTIMORE
July 2, 1964
I'm delighted to once again have the opportunity of being here
today at this National Safety Council Awards Luncheon to accept,
on behalf of the people of this State, the certificates of achievement
for traffic safety.
I was first notified that Maryland was to receive these certificates
in a telegram sent to me early in June by Mr. Howard Pyle, President
of the National Safety Council. Many of you, I am sure, will recall
that I received a similar telegram last year when Maryland also was
awarded substantial recognition for its efforts in behalf of traffic safety.

State Police, the State Department of Motor Vehicles, the State Roads
Commission, the State Department of Education and the Maryland
Traffic Safety Commission. All of us gathered here today and, in-
deed, all the citizens of Maryland owe a good deal of these various
departments for their untiring efforts to promote safety on our high-
ways. The personnel of these departments recognize, as do I, that
one of our primary tasks in public service is the protection of lives
and property of citizens.
That Maryland has achieved a substantial measure of success in
this endeavor is reflected by that fact that our State received a rating
of 91 per cent for its outstanding program in all categories of the
National Safety Council's annual traffic inventory. Maryland this year
is receiving six awards for its achievements in traffic safety and we
continue to rank among the top states in this field.
A few weeks ago, I attended the annual Governors' Conference in
Cleveland, Ohio, and it was during that Conference that I was first
notified that Maryland had scored 91 per cent in the annual traffic
