This is also a proud and happy occasion for Maryland—especially
for those of us in the Annapolis area—because of the decision by
Aeronautical Radio, Inc., to locate in the Annapolis Science Center.
This will bring a new multi-million dollar payroll to this area and,
perhaps even more important, will result in hundreds of scientists,
engineers and technicians moving into Annapolis and vicinity—the kind
of new citizens that every community welcomes.
The final reason why this is a particularly proud day for me is
that the Hydrasearch Company's new operation in this Center is Mary-
land's 867th new or expanded industrial facility since I signed into
law the legislation creating the Maryland Economic Development Com-
mission on March 11, 1959. I am privileged as well as proud to say
that both the Maryland Department of Economic Development and
the Governor's Science Resource Advisory Board played important, and
in some instances decisive, roles in all of the achievements I have
mentioned here today. Mr. Willard Triest, Vice-President of Research
Land Corporation and Executive Vice-President of the Hydrasearch
Company, has told me that the services rendered his company by the
Maryland Department of Economic Development spelled the difference
between Maryland and Pennsylvania in the selection of a plant site.
I want to thank both Mr. Triest and the officials of his parent com-
pany, the Dixon Valve and Coupling Company of Philadelphia, for
these kind and reassuring words. Recognition should also be given
at this time to the parts played by Mr. George W. Hubley, Jr., Director
of the Department of Economic Development, and his old friend, Mr.
Ed Baxter, Regional Director of the United States Department of
Health, Education and Welfare, in bringing the public health service
unit here.
In view of all these considerations, it gives me a great deal of
personal gratification to present to the Annapolis Science Center the
official flag of the Free State of Maryland, mounted on a staff
adorned with the Botonee Cross, to be flown as a symbol of another
important step forward in our growth and progress.
