entitled to protection in their religious liberty. " In other words, it is
not only our right, but it is also our duty to worship God in the way
that we think he would require.
Gatherings such as this, I think, are important to us in that they
renew in our hearts and minds a principle which we should not forget—
that ultimately the best service we can render is to perpetuate the
spiritual values which have guided our Nation through the glorious
years of its history. In the spirit of the people who drafted our first
State Constitution, let us thank Almighty God for the civil and religious
liberty which we enjoy and let us pray that this and future generations
will continue to enjoy the blessings of our Creator.
REMARKS, PRESENTATION OF MAN OF THE YEAR
AWARD TO LAWRENCE CARDINAL SHEHAN
BALTIMORE
January 5, 1966
When, in September of 1961, Bishop Shehan was returned as coad-
jutor Archbishop to the late Archbishop Keough, we welcomed him as
a native son and as a member of a family which has distinguished
itself in the business and professional life of our city and state. We
knew from his service as auxiliary bishop in this Archdiocese that we
were having returned to us a man of deep religious feeling, a proven
administrator and a man of energy and action. When Cardinal Shehan
succeeded Archbishop Keough in December of 1961, our great expecta-
tions for him were fulfilled. And he has proved to be not only a
worthy successor to Bishop John Carroll but indeed is one of the out-
standing prelates of the nation and the world.
When His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, made his historic visit to the
United States last October, I was privileged to have an audience with
him at the residence of Cardinal Spellman in New York. I took that
occasion to tell Pope Paul of the pride Marylanders felt that our Arch-
bishop had been elevated to the College of Cardinals. The Pope said
of him: "We share your high opinion of Cardinal Shehan, and we
have come to lean on him heavily. "
The people of Maryland, like the Holy Father, have "come to
lean on him heavily. "
