in our national affairs. Religion and national destiny are forever en-
twined. That ours is a "nation whose God is the Lord" is explicit in
our Declaration of Independence, is implicit in our instruments of gov-
ernment and permeates all of our institutions of government. The vir-
tues of our people and the values of our culture are derived from the
premise that this is "one nation under God. " Our American society
and our American way of life are built upon the Judeo-Christian con-
cept of the relationship of man to God....

As Americans, striving for the betterment of our lives as individuals
and for the improvement of our society as a whole, we rejoice in the
rich blessing we have in being citizens of a "nation whose God is the
Lord. " As Christians, we rejoice in the words of our Master—to An-
drew, and to Peter, James and John—that we need not be troubled,
knowing that if we endure to the end in his faith we shall be saved.

ADDRESS, STUDENT LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
December 10, 1964

It is indeed a pleasure for me to welcome all of you to this Second
Student Leadership Breakfast here at the University of Maryland today.
I know how difficult and how inconvenient it was for many of you to
be here this morning but your interest in and your support of this
project most certainly is appreciated.

As Governor of Maryland, I'm called upon frequently during the
course of a year to deliver many different types of talks, but rarely do I
speak at 7: 30 o'clock in the morning. I can assure you that I will
follow the admonition of a preacher I knew back home who was
noted for short sermons; "if you don't save them in the first 15 minutes, "
he would say, "they're not going to be saved. " Frankly, I'm a bit more
optimistic about the young people gathered here today but I shall not
extend my remarks to prove this point.

Prayer breakfasts actually began in the Congress of the United States
more than 23 years ago and, since then, the idea that men and women
should gather together in fellowship, seeking divine guidance for all their
purposes, has spread throughout the land. I am rather proud of the
fact that prayer breakfasts in Maryland were initiated during my term
of office and, as I recall, the first one, five years ago, was attended by
