In closing, let me assure you of my continued interest in developing
to their full potentiality Maryland's Park and recreational resources.
I extend to each of you here my sincere congratulations for the interest
you have shown in initiating sound programs for our parks and rec-
reational areas and for the concern you are showing for the good
health and enjoyment of the citizens of this State. It is my hope that
each of you will leave this conference with renewed inspiration and
dedication to the task of improving our recreational resources. Through
these activities you are contributing to the moral, physical and cultural
betterment of us all.

Mr. Mayor, members of the Town Council of Union Bridge, Mrs.
Shriner, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
Let me begin by expressing my gratitude and appreciation for this
opportunity to join with you here today in the opening of this hand-
some new community house and splendid new recreation area. You
have built here on this picturesque site a building and a recreational
facility that will broaden and enhance the lives of the people of Union
Bridge in this generation and in the generations of the future. That
it will be a tremendous asset to the community, as a place where
young and old can gather for pleasure and relaxation, and for the
pursuit of their common purposes as neighbors, goes without saying.
This lively and prosperous little town is a much better place in
which to live and to enjoy the fruits of life as a result of what has
been done here on these lovely acres. I am impressed in particular
by the fact that this building, and the land which has been developed
around it for sports and recreational use, is the creation of people
working together for common ends and mutual objectives, manifesting
the true spirit of neighborliness and good will that characterize the
best in civilized human beings. As the Governor of your State, I am
proud of your achievement, and I hasten to pay tribute to the imagina-
