governments of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, must regenerate
an interest in the preservation of the city.
Individual citizens, not only in Annapolis but in other parts of the
State, should offer their support to the cause of "creative conservation"
as it effects this charming and picturesque old city. Citizen participation
perhaps can be most effective when channeled into organizations such
as this. Historic Annapolis Incorporated. Too few Marylanders., in my
opinion, know how deeply indebted they are to this great organization
for the time, the talent and the energy it has spent in preserving this rich
heritage—the City of Annapolis. Speaking for myself, and for others of
this Administration, I am profoundly grateful to Historic Annapolis,
and all of its members, for this expression of confidence in what your
State government has done to assist you in this most commendable civic
undertaking.
Although I shall be your Governor for only a few more months,
I sincerely hope that opportunities may arise in the future for me to
offer my modest private services to preserving this city where I have
spent so many pleasurable years and which I shall always consider
my "home, " regardless of where I may be living. To those who will
succeed me, I commend a continued vigorous effort on the part of the
State to keep intact the beauty and the richness of this, our capital
city, and urge that they plan with great care and caution its growth
in the future.
