connection with compliance with the standards and regulations. But
I am sure that they are not, and will not be, problems which cannot
be ironed out. And I am sure that you understand that their solution
ultimately works to your advantage in the improvement of the in-
stitutions which you operate.
I would like to leave this thought with you, finally. Let us keep
reminding ourselves that your State government and you have a com-
mon objective — the proper care and the proper treatment of Mary-
land citizens who are victims of long-term illnesses. The road we have
traveled has not been an easy one and the road ahead will have its
pitfalls and obstacles. But we can avoid the pitfalls and overcome
the obstacles if we continue to work together to improve the status
and care of our elderly citizens.
ADDRESS, DEDICATION OF SOCIAL SECURITY
ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
GLEN BURNIE
August 27, 1963

personnel of this Social Security District Office, ladies and gentlemen:
I am highly honored, I assure you, to have this opportunity to take
part in this ceremony in which we open formally this handsome new
building which now serves as a District Office of the Social Security
Administration in Maryland. This splendid new structure evidences
the desire and the determination on the part of the Social Security
Administration to offer the best possible service to the nearly quarter
of a million persons it serves in our State. In turn, let me assure this
important federal agency that the people of Maryland, and I, as their
Governor, are most grateful for this gesture of concern and interest.
I am told that this office, with its staff of some 20 persons, serves a
District comprised of some 400, 000 persons — in Anne Arundel County,
Howard County and parts of Baltimore County. The Social Security
Administration is to be commended highly for the selection of this
site in Glen Burnie for the construction of a new District Office. This
area of Maryland, lying in the environs of our largest city, is one of
the fastest growing, most rapidly developing communities of our entire
State. And from all indications, it may be expected to grow at an
