I am looking forward eagerly to working with you closely during
these next four years in a common task. It will be our purpose in-
dividually and collectively, to discharge to the limit of our capacity
the responsibilities we have as servants of the people who elected us
to office. I welcome the opportunity, as I know you do, to make
whatever contribution I can to the betterment of our great State.
My office will be open to each of you at all times during the session,
and I assure you that it will be a pleasure to me, and to the members
of my staff, to assist you in any way possible in the performance of
your duties as lawmakers.

In conclusion, let me say again that I am happy to welcome you to
Annapolis and that I consider it both a pleasure and a privilege to
have this opportunity to work with you during the next four years to
provide good government for the people of Maryland.

RADIO ADDRESS, "ANNAPOLIS INDEX"
BALTIMORE

January 1, 1963

Let me at the outset express my gratitude to radio station WBAL
for inviting me to appear on the "Annapolis Index" program again
this year to extend New Year's greetings to all my friends in Maryland.
It is my sincere wish that the New Year which is about to begin will
bring to all of us happiness, prosperity and good health.

The celebration of the advent of a New Year is for all of us a time
of rejoicing, high spirits and good fellowship. Every heart is filled
with excitement as we gather with friends to ring out the old year
and ring in the new. We mortals of course cannot know whether this
new period in time will bring us good fortune or ill fortune. We face
it nevertheless in a spirit of optimism and courage, having faith that
we will be able to overcome the obstacles and enjoy the new experi-
ences that are sure to come.

While New Year's Day is a time for merriment, it is also an occasion
for serious reflection. We look back upon the twelve months that
have passed, recall the events which have occurred and try to pro-
nounce a sound judgment upon what we have accomplished and what
we have failed to accomplish. And with this critical appraisal of our
deeds and failures, we try to lay a solid foundation for the year ahead.
