the community just as doctors, lawyers, engineers and other profes-
sional groups are integral parts of the community. He cannot con-
sider problems that affect the community as problems of other citi-
zens. He cannot submerge himself into his own professional affairs
to such an extent that he becomes oblivious to the problems that
affect us all. I think that as we deliberate upon the future role of
the soldier we must ponder this fact. I think also that we must rec-
ognize that the military man of this decade faces far more complex
problems than those of us who served a generation ago. Our task is
no longer to produce a fighting machine capable of defending our
shores from invaders or being employed as a useful device in diplo-
macy. Our task now and in the future is to recognize that the mili-
tary can serve use as effectively in peace as well as in war. This is
particularly important when we consider that the struggle we are
engaged in today is more ideological than physical.

In glancing over the program for this two-day conference, I was
particularly pleased in noting the many phases of higher education
that will be dismissed. I was happy to discover that many of the
topics scheduled for discussion did not deal specifically with the prob-
lems of the higher educational needs of military personnel. This
reflects, I think, a basic acceptance of the fact that military men are
indeed a part of the community and no longer considered a profes-
sion apart from society. I was also happy to note the number of dis-
tinguished educators and military men who will participate in this
conference. I would expect that your deliberations today and tomor-
row will strongly influence the future role that the military will play
in relation to the community at large.

Again, let me welcome you to Maryland and extend to you my
good wishes for a very successful conference.
