nomic expansion in this age would not be possible without the pro-
duction of an adequate supply of electric energy. Maryland has been
generously endowed by nature with the characteristics which have
made it a place of pleasant and abundant living.

In the years ahead, we must be careful that all of its resources, nat-
ural and human are utilized to the fullest extent so that the ever-
burgeoning population may continue to live in happiness and abun-
dance. This will be accomplished by the cooperation of government
and private enterprise.

This new plant, which will produce 710, 000 kilowatts of electricity
when completed, is a fine example of the determination of private
enterprise to bear its share of the burden. We in government can do
no better than to follow this example. In constructing this new gen-
erating station, and planning for its enlargement in the future, the
Potomac Electric Power Company has envisioned the industrial growth
of this great metropolitan area, along with the general increase in
population, and is making provisions for the inevitable increase in
the demand fro electric power in the area. That is what I had in
mind at the beginning of these remarks I offered my commendation
to the company for its vision and its dedication to the service of the
public.

I know I can speak for local government, as well as the State gov-
ernment which I represent, when I say it has been a pleasure to
cooperate with the Potomac Electric Power Company in the great
effort it has made and is making to provide the people of this area
of Maryland with this vital product—electricity. It is quite clear to
all of us that the company will be required to expand its generating
facilities in order to keep pace with the growth of this community.

As we dedicate this splendid new plant, I know we can pledge the
continued cooperation of the State and its counties to the company
in its efforts to fulfill its responsibility as a public utility.
