And as I said at the cornerstone-laying ceremonies here last year, we
in state government will endeavor to respond to this expression of your
confidence by creating the kind of economic climate in which this
center, and the various individual enterprises therein, may flourish.
There is every indication that the business establishments which are
locating here will grow and make profits. You are situated on what
has been described as the main street of a vast urban expanse that
extends from Boston, Mass, to Washington, D. C., and consequently
are in the very heart of one of the most rapidly growing and pros-
perous areas of the entire country. In family income and in per-
household effective buying income, Prince George's County is ranked
second among our Maryland subdivisions, and in wholesale trade and
retail trade, it is ranked fourth.
Thus, I believe we can conclude that the investments made her are
secure and that the future of those who are employed here is bright.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Capital Plaza Shopping Center
will be a distinct asset to this thriving community of suburban Wash-
ington, and that it will be both a convenience and a valuable eco-
nomic resource to the people who live in this area.
The state of Maryland is pleased to welcome to its business com-
munity this new enterprise. And on behalf of all of its citizens, may I
offer congratulations and extend best wishes for success to the manage-
ment and all employees of business which are locating here.

so many good people from all over Maryland are interested enough
in the development of our travel industry to gather here today for
this meeting. I understand that some of you have driven all the way
from the farthest reaches of the Eastern Shore and the distant Al-
leghenies to be with us.
There is never a day that passes here in this historic city that I
am not reminded of the ever increasing popularity of travel. Everyday,
hundreds of visitors pass through our State House — in fact, this
year, for the first time in Maryland's history, we have had almost
