ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Governor Tawes' interest in all aspects of economic de-
velopment continued at a high level during his second term.
His pride in the achievements of his creation in 1959, the
Economic Development Department, was reflected in his fre-
quent recounting of its success in attracting new industry.
Progress toward the goal he set for Maryland, a major science-
research area, was rapid during his last four years., as numer-
ous science-based research organizations located in the Wash-
ington suburban area, in metropolitan Baltimore and in
Frederick and Annapolis. The recognition by the State of the
close relationship between these organizations and the cul-
tural, scientific and social environment was a strong factor
in the Governor's request to the Legislature for increased
funds for both public and higher education. The State also
began to support financially construction of science centers
as recommended by the Governor's Science Resources Ad-
visory Board.
Greater activity in the promotion of tourism was another
characteristic of this period. The investment in the Maryland
Pavilion at the New York World's Fair, the promotion of
interest in historical sites and a planned program of attract-
ing visitors was evidence of this emphasis.
The Gross State Product, an index found only in Mary-
land, showed a more rapid increase in economic prosperity
than the national average. The role of State government in
creating a favorable climate was a significant factor.
REMARKS, OPENING OF CAPITAL PLAZA
SHOPPING CENTER
BLADENSBURG
August 7, 1963
I am enjoying immensely the international flavor of this gathering
— the presence of the very lovely young lady from Brazil, whose
beauty and talent establish her just claim to the title of Miss Universe
—the presence also of the distinguished ambassadors who represent
their countries here at the seat of our federal government.
