This is not to say that Democrats should not engage in spirited
primary contests for the choice of party nominees. Some of our most
notable victories have come about after heated primary battles. But
never unless the wounds of primary fights were allowed to heal and
Democrats stood together under one banner in the general election
which followed. The main purpose of this meeting here this evening
is to lay the kind of foundation for the Democratic Party upon which
it can go into the election of next year with the assurance that it
will be sound, strong and united. It is my hope that local Democratic
organizations throughout the State will adopt a similar plan and
pursue a similar course. If they do, we have no cause for fear. The
history of our party tells us that in such circumstances we are assured
of victory.
I deeply appreciate the opportunity you have afforded me to attend
this fund-raising dinner for the Democratic Party in Prince George's
County. It has been a pleasure to have worked with you closely in
the interest of our great Party, and it is my fervent hope that the
relationship will continue in the future.
REMARKS, UNITED DEMOCRATIC WOMEN'S CLUBS OF
MARYLAND CONVENTION
OCEAN CITY
August 21, 1965
Mrs. Fleming, Dr. Otenasek, Mrs. Ningard, Mrs. McNamara,
Senator Brewster, Senator Tydings, Attorney General and Mrs. Finan,
Comptroller and Mrs. Goldstein, Members of Congress, other public
officials, distinguished guests and ladies and gentlemen:
Mrs. Tawes and I are delighted to once again have the oppor-
tunity of attending this 41st Annual Convention of the United
Democratic Women's Clubs of Maryland not only because it re-
affirms our belief in the strength and purpose of the Democratic
Party but also because it presents us with a splendid opportunity to
renew our ties with friends of long standing. As many of you know,
I have been accorded the privilege of attending meetings here in
Ocean City for more years that I care to remember and I am con-
vinced that this annual get-together is the most firmly entrenched
institution that the Maryland Democratic Party can claim. Even in
off-years, this convention lures candidates and would-be candidates
