any of those campaigns did I see him discouraged or bitter. He is an
inspiring fellow — a man with the unique ability to bolster sagging
spirits and to leave one feeling a little bit better by having had the
pleasure of his company. For these and for a great many other
reasons, I was delighted and happy when the committee asked that
I welcome you tonight to this Testimonial Dinner in honor of my
long-time friend and his lovely wife, Hazel.

It is my understanding that Lou will begin campaigning in earnest
on Friday of this week. Once he hits the highways and byways of
Maryland, I doubt if those of us here will be seeing him too often.
However, I am sure I speak for everyone here tonight when I extend
to Louis Goldstein our best wishes for a successful campaign in both
the primary and general elections.

REMARKS, DEMOCRATIC DINNER PARTY
WICOMICO COUNTY CIVIC CENTER

March 30, 1964

It is heart-warming and encouraging to see such a splendid turn-
out of Eastern Shore Democrats on this occasion. It is my happy
privilege to welcome to Maryland and to present to this audience
our distinguished guest of the evening, the honorable Luther H.
Hodges, Secretary of Commerce of the United States. Mr. Secretary,
we are deeply pleased and highly honored to have you with us this
evening.

As most of you know, I am sure, Luther Hodges was Governor
of North Carolina before he became a cabinet member, under the
late President Kennedy and now under President Johnson. It has
been my good fortune to have been associated closely with him, as
a Governor of one of our sister states of the South and since that
time as Secretary of Commerce.

Luther Hodges has crowded more careers in fewer years than any-
one I have known. He began as a mill hand and office boy in a mill
in a small North Carolina town, moved up the scale to Personnel
Manager, Mill Manager, Production Manager and finally, in 1943,
to Vice-President of Marshall Field & Company, the great retailing
firm which owned the mill. Mr. Hodges in 1950 announced his re-
tirement, or so it was said at the time, but subsequent events showed
