mittee remarked that the Republican Party hoped to capture at least
14 Senate seats in next year's election. However, he indicated that
he would be satisfied with ten. Of the states mentioned as trouble-
some for Republicans, this GOP stalwart cited Maryland. Judging
from the fine work that has been done in past elections by the mem-
bers of the United Democratic Women's Clubs, I would suspect that
Maryland is always going to be a troublesome state for Republicans.
A few days ago, Senator Brewster and I had the privilege of meet-
ing with President Kennedy for an hour in his office in Washington.
I am happy to report to you that, as a result of that meeting, the
President has advised us that he will participate in the ceremonies
opening the new Northeastern Expressway between Baltimore and
the Delaware Memorial Bridge. But, as is usually the case when
individuals active in public affairs meet, the discussion gradually
became political in nature. I can tell you now that both Senator
Brewster and I assured the President that the Democratic Party in
Maryland has an excellent opportunity to send another Democrat
to the United States Senate next November. We could provide
President Kennedy with this assurance because both Senator Brewster
and I have been privileged to work with such dedicated Democratic
organizations as the United Democratic Women's Clubs of Maryland.

WORKERS RALLY

My good friend, Bob Romadka, distinguished guests, ladies and
gentlemen and fellow Democrats:
I'm delighted to be here in Essex this evening and to have this
opportunity to see and talk to so many of my good friends in this
area. Frankly, I haven't had much time lately to attend as many
democratic functions as I would like to simply because events of the
past few weeks have prevented me from leaving Annapolis. Never-
theless, I have been following the progress of the current campaign
closely and certain aspects of this year's primary appear somewhat
confusing.
I think a newcomer to this State might have difficulty in determin-
