STATEMENT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF
ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, ANNAPOLIS

September 30, 1965

In view of the current public interest in the federal government's
plan to develop Assateague Island as a National Seashore, it occurred
to me that the people of Maryland might also be interested in what
the State has done, and plans to do, with its portion of the island.

The State of Maryland owns, and is developing as a park, 640
acres with two miles of ocean frontage, on Assateague. During the
past year, the State Department of Forests and Parks has constructed
two 250-car parking areas, has taken action to replace two miles of
barrier dunes, has drilled a water well, has built a temporary con-
tact station at the control gate, has posted numerous public safety
signs and has established a temporary trailer office. A contract total-
ling $156, 000 has been awarded for the erection of a bathhouse and
concession stand, a pumphouse for the well and to install water lines
to serve the bathhouse and the concession stand.

Schedules for this winter are the following projects, estimated to
cost approximately $40, 000:

1. Ten campers parking areas totaling 75 spaces

2. A trailer sanitary station

3. Life guard station and barracks

4. Storage and beach captain stations
5 An incinerator

6. Striping for parking lots and road

7. Beach grass planting

8. Aerial fertilization of dunes

9. Surface treatment between lots

10. Mosquito control ditches

11. Curbing and averting drains around rear of lot

12. Life guard stand

13. Lighting of building and parking lot

14. Construction of a boardwalk from parking lot to bathhouse
to beach
