its responsibilities, Maryland agriculture is constantly girding itself
to do a better job to meet the steadily increasing needs of the age.

All Marylanders might do well to examine the work done at this
and past conventions of the Maryland Farm Bureau. It would assure
them, as it does me, that a forward-looking agricultural community
is one of the strongest bulwarks a free community can have against
the spectre of want.

I have endeavored in my Administration to be aware of the prob-
lems and issues facing the farmer in today's growing society.

As you know, the last session of the General Assembly passed a
resolution recommending a study of the agricultural setup in the
State. In accordance with that resolution, I appointed a committee
of highly capable people, all well acquainted with agricultural matters.
I can report to you that this has been one of the hardest working
study committees I have seen in my experience in State government.
The members have been burning the midnight oil and have taken
close looks at agricultural programs in other states. They have given
freely of their time and the people of Maryland shall long be in their
debt for their dedication to the job they were given.

I feel sure that the report they will submit to me shortly will be
thorough and expert. It will receive the closest scrutiny I can give
it and I know that its recommendations will go a long way toward
assuring that any decision I may make in the field of agriculture will
be in the best interests of the people of Maryland.

Again, please accept my warmest greetings and earnest hopes that
this convention and others to follow will be interesting and fruitful
for all of you. Thank you.
