highway was opened to traffic, they have been counting the days for
various reasons. Whether they look upon it as a commuter route, a
highway to recreation points or an important segment in the economic
growth of our State, completion of the John Hanson Highway was
important to us all.

When this Administration took office, the final section of the John
Hanson Highway had been an annoying gap in our expressway system
for two years. One of the first acts of this Administration was to adver-
tise for bids on this final section. Today, the job is done and the true,
vast capacity of this road as a carrier of people and goods will be real-
ized. Therefore in the name of the people of Maryland, I officially open
this highway to traffic.

In just a moment, we shall unveil a marker to John Hanson and right
now I want to thank Mrs. Laura Blinn and Mrs. Brooks Kerby, who so
generously donated it.

Thus, we dedicate this highway in memory of John Hanson, Mary-
lander, who served his State and nation well. We dedicate it in the
hope that we, too, have served our State and nation well and with an
earnest desire that what we have done here today will benefit not only
our contemporaries but also those who will travel this corridor in years
to come.

ADDRESS, ENGINEERS CLUB
BALTIMORE

January 10, 1962

There are two words which have taken on tremendous importance in
modern life. They affect almost everything we do. And because of the
nature of our world and our way of life, and because of the huge popu-
lation growth in our country, these words will take on even greater
importance in the future. The words I refer to and the words I would
like to think about with you for a few moments this afternoon are—
mobility and accessibility.

These words, I believe, may well be the key to an economically and
culturally healthy tomorrow. Mobility is defined as the state of being
movable or a state characterized by ease of movement. It is a condition
vital to economic well being. The strength of an economy often is in
direct ratio to the degree of mobility.
