who, in 53 years of State service, has stayed young and forward-
looking. Everyone, patients and their families, employees, visitors, and
friends. Mr. Dayhoff is an example of Spring Grove progress.
As Governor of Maryland, I have made an effort here at the Spring
Grove State Hospital to provide buildings of the type we have here,
which will implement active treatment and will eliminate the old
center building. When I became Governor, one of my first acts was
to ask the legislature to appropriate funds for replacement facilities
for the old center building. Just to the west of us is now being con-
structed a 200-bed infirmary building and a central service building,
and three 100-bed cottages for the treatment of patients requiring
long-term care. This fine structure which has been designed by Mr.
Henry Powell Hopkins has modern treatment facilities and will be
used for the admission and active treatment of patients whose medical
prognosis is that they can be discharged from the hospital in a relatively
short period of time.
We are fortunate in Maryland to have such an employee as Mr.
Dayhoff. To all of us he has become a living example of the words
of St. Francis of Assisi:
"Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon; where
There is doubt, faith; where there is
Despair, hope; where there is darkness
Light; where there is sadness, joy. "
