in the New York Times which compared Senator Kennedy to his
Republican opponent. "Senator Kennedy's approach, " said the Times,
"is more reasoned, less emotional, more flexible, less doctrinaire, more
imaginative, less negative than that of the Vice President. " These, I
firmly believe, are qualities most urgently needed in the man who will
occupy the White House during the vital years ahead.
Do we not desperately need reasonableness, flexibility, imagination?
In times like these, can we afford to gamble with emotionalism, with
lack of imagination, with the negative attitude? I don't think we can.
In Senator Kennedy, we have a man who possesses all the essential
ingredients of character and ability to discharge this most important
political office in the world. We have become more and more con-
vinced of this as we have watched the progress of his campaign—his
decisiveness in debate, his eagerness to get down to issues, his earn-
estness, his sincerity, his amazing mental capacity.
The same sterling qualities of character and leadership are to be
found in Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, our vice-presidential nominee.
As we approach Election Day, the issue is clearly drawn. It is a
simple issue: Is America moving fast enough or isn't she? Those
Americans who believe our country should move faster, both at home
and in the cold war, will vote for Senators Kennedy and Johnson. I
confidently believe that most Americans will be found on our side
when the vote is counted next Tuesday.
