Between now and Convention time these men, and others who are now
only extreme dark horses, will be increasingly explaining themselves
and their views to the American people, and especially to Democrats
all over the nation....
I would like to suggest to all of you good Maryland Democrats as-
sembled here today, that under the conditions that prevail, Maryland
would be wise to send to Los Angeles a delegation of alert and in-
telligent representatives... men and women who will be able to ex-
ercise to its fullest extent the traditional freedom of choice which is
the proud hall-mark of our Democratic Party convention... By so
doing, our small State, with its 18 convention votes, will be able to
assure itself that it will be able to play its full role in what is sure
to be the most exciting and wide-open convention that this nation
has seen in many a day.... I believe that our Maryland Democratic
voters, as they watch the convention proceedings on their television
sets, will be proud to see our unfettered delegation casting its votes
for the nominee who at convention time—has clearly emerged from
the crowd as the true, the best, and the finest man to carry the stand-
ard of the Democratic presidential nomination... !
In the meantime, let us Maryland Democrats continue to concen-
trate in giving this State the best that is in us, so that we may show
the voters, —through our actions in the administration of this State-
that the Democratic Party is ready once again to take up the leader-
ship of the nation as a whole!...
ADDRESS, UNITED DEMOCRATIC WOMEN'S
CLUBS OF MARYLAND
OCEAN CITY
August 22, 1959
This annual assemblage of Democratic women has become a date
of first importance on the calendar of every Maryland Democrat who
is interested in what has been called this "great game" of politics.
Political careers and political campaigns have been launched from
these platforms, and many decisions of significance to our Party and
our State have been made at these gatherings. It is to me, as it is to
others, always a great delight to come here and talk public affairs
