RUNAWAYS.

of the Sale; and shall only be accountable to the
Owner for the Residue.  Persons sued for any Thing
done in pursuance of this Act, may plead the General
Issue:  And in case of Non-Suit, &c. shall have double

SABBATH BREAKING.

    1.  PERSONS Working on Sundays, or commanding 
or suffering their Children or Slaves to
work, or profane the Lord's Day by Gaming, Fishing,
Fowling, Hunting, or other unlawful Pastimes, &c.
shall, on Conviction before a single Magistrate, forfeit
200 lb Tobacco, to the Use of the County.  1723, ch.
16, §. 10.
    2.  Any House-keepers selling Strong Liquors on Sunday,
(except in Cases of absolute Necessity) or suffering
Drunkenness, Gaming, or unlawful Sports or
Recreations in their Houses, shall forfeit 2000 lb Tobacco:
One Half to the use aforesaid, the other Half
to the Informer.  Ibid. §. 11.
    3.  All Informations for Sabbath-breaking shall be
made within One Month after the Fact.  And all Prosecutions 
for selling Liquors, and suffering Drunkenness
and Gaming on the Sabbath-Day, within Six
Months.  Ibid.  §. 13.

SAILORS.

    1.  Public House-keepers trusting any Sea-faring
Men, (not being Residents within this Province) for
any Sum above Five Shillings, in any one Voyage,
without Leave from the Commander of the Ship, &c.
shall lose their Debt:  And any Note, Bill, Bond, &c.
taken by a Public-House-keeper for such Debt, shall
be void.  1712, ch. 10, §. 2.
    2.  Victuallers, &c. entertaining or harbouring Sailors,
without Licence of their Master, to the Hinderance
of the Ship or Commander, shall be liable to the
Penalties of such as deal with Servants.  Ibid. §. 3.

    3.  This Act shall not extend to the Master or Chief
Mate of any Vessel.  Ibid.  §. 4.

SCHOOLS.

K. WILLIAM'S SCHOOL AT ANNAPOLIS.

    1.  A School to be established at Anne-Arundel Town,
for educating Youth in Latin, Greek, Writing, &c.
to consist of one Master, one Usher, one Writing-Master,
and One Hundred Scholars; to be called K.
WILLIAM'S SCHOOL, and managed by Trustees, capable 
in Law of holding Lands to the Value of 1500 l.
Sterling, and all other Personal Estate of the Gift of
any Person whatsoever, to be by them disposed of to
the building and establishing of the said School, and
raising 120 l. Sterling per Annum, for the Salary of the
aforesaid Master, &c. and the necessary Repairs and
Improvements of the same.  1696, ch. 17, §. 2 and 3.
    2.  The said Trustees are incorporated into a Body
Politic, by the Name of the Rectors, Governors,
Trustees and Visitors of the Free Schools of Maryland;
with full Power to plead and be impleaded, &c.  And
they, or any other Persons, have Power to give, grant,
&c. any Lands, &c. to the Value of 1500 l. Sterling
per Annum, to the said Governors, &c. incorporate,
and their Successors, for ever, for the Uses aforesaid.

    3.  The Trustees are impowered to make Bye-Laws
for the good Government of the School, to be observed

by the Masters and Scholars; such Rules being no
way contrary to the Royal Prerogative, the Laws of
England or Maryland, nor the Canons, &c. of the
Church of England.  Ibid.  §. 6 and 7.
    4.  The Number of the Governors and Visitors, always
to be Eighteen, and not exceeding Twenty.
One of which to be chosen Rector, and to exercise
that Authority for the Year, and after, till another be
duly Elected and Sworn to that Office, and so on in
Succession.  And, on the Death or Removal of any
Visitors out of the Province, the Rector, and other
Governors and Visitors, may chuse one or more of the
Principal and better Sort of Inhabitants of the Province,
to fill up the Vacancy:  Which Visitors, so chosen,
shall take an Oath before the Rector and other
Visitors, well and faithfully to execute the said Office.

    5.  The Rector, by Advice and Consent of Three
or more Visitors, may call the Governors and Visitors
together, who may hold their Court or Convocation
in the Free School, and punish any Disorders or Offences
of any Master or Scholars, against the Laws of
the School; and displace any Master, &c. and put others
in their Steads.  Ibid.  §. 10.
    6.  The Rector, Governors, &c. to have a Common
Seal, which they may use in all Causes and Businesses
relating to the Schools, and may break, change, and
renew the same at Pleasure.  Ibid.  §. 11.
    7.  The Rector, Governors, &c. as soon as enabled
by Donations, exceeding 120 l. per Year, allowed
(Art. 1,) for the Support of the First School at Severn,
shall establish a Second School at Oxford, with the like
Allotment of 120 l. per Year for the Support thereof;
and, after that, to erect and establish more Free
Schools, viz. One in each County, &c. allotting to
each the Sum of 120 l. per Annum.  Ibid.  §. 12 and 13.
    8.  The Lot given by Governor Nicholson, and Houses
thereon, are confirmed to the Rector, Governors
and Visitors, to the Use of the Free School in Annapolis,
for ever; notwithstanding the Want of Writings,
or any Record thereof.  1715, ch. 4, §. 2.
    9.  The Rector and any Number of Governors and
Visitors, not less than Five, are enabled to execute the
several Powers and Authorities given to a Majority of
the Members of the Corporation by the above Act of
1696.  Ibid. §. 3.
    10.  The Rector and Visitors impowered to sell Surveyor's
Forest, in Dorchester County, devised to them by
Thomas Smithson, Esq; and also the Houses and Lots in
Annapolis, &c. and to lay out the Purchase Money on
Interest, for Payment of the Master, &c. 1750, ch. 26.

DUTIES appropriated to the Support of  SCHOOLS.

    11.  For the following Goods exported out of this
Province, by Non-Residents, viz.
    Dried Beef or Bacon, per C.Wt. 21 d. and so in
        Proportion for a greater or lesser Quantity.
    Pork or Beef, undried, per Barrel, containing
200 Wt. 12 d.
to be collected by the Naval Officers, who shall account 
annually for the same to the Public Treasurers,
&c.  1704,  ch. 27, §. 1 and 5.  See Bacon, &c.
    12. For the following Goods imported for Sale by
Non-Residents, viz.
            Pork per Barrel,        -        -        -        1 s. 0
            ------ per C.Wt.        -        -        -          0    6
            Pitch per Barrel,        -        -                 1    0
            Tar per Barrel,        -        -        -           0    6
to be collected by the Naval Officers, &c.  1723,

    13. For all Negroes imported by Land or Water,
and for all Irish Servants, being Papists, imported, 20 s.

    14.  A farther Additional Duty of 40 s. Currency per
poll, on all Negroes imported by Land or Water.
