Shift, Shoes and Stockings, a blue Apron, Two white
Linen Caps, and Three Barrels of Indian Corn.  Ibid.

FREIGHT of TOBACCO.

    1.  Masters of Ships, before they take in any Tobacco
on Freight, shall publish, under their Hands, by
a Note fixed on the County Court-House Door, at
what Rate they will receive Tobacco upon Freight per
Ton; which Note shall be recorded by the County
Clerk.  1704, ch., 62, §. 1.
    2.  Merchants or others, shipping any Tobacco on
Freight, before such Note set up, shall forfeit all such
Tobacco, or the Value in Money.  One Half to the
Support of Government, the other to the Informer.
Ibid.  §. 2.
    3.  Masters of Ships taking Tobacco on board, before
such Publication, shall forfeit 20 s. per Hogshead,
to the Uses aforesaid.  Ibid.  §. 3.
    4.  Certificate of such Publication, and Rate of
Freight, under Hand of the COunty Clerk, shall be
sent with Craft fetching Tobacco from another COuntry,
on Penalty of 40 s. Sterling, to the Uses aforesaid.

    5.  Collectors and Naval Officers shall procure (at
the County Charge) and affix Copies of this Act in
their Office, on Forfeiture of 40 s. Sterling, to the

Uses aforesaid. Ibid.  §. 5.

FURS and SKINS.

    The Duty laid on them by the Act of 1704, ch. 27,
is taken off by 1723, ch. 11, §. 1.

GAUGE, &c. of BARRELS.

    1.  Every Barrel, wherein Pork, Beef, Pitch, Tar or
Turpentine shall be packed or filled, either for Exportation
out of, or Sale within this Province, shall contain
at least 31 1/2 Gallons Wine Measure.  1745, ch. 15, §. 2.
    2.  The Contents of every Pork or Beef Barrel, at
Exportation or Sale, shall be at least 220 lb of good
nett Pork or Beef, well salted and preserved.  Ibid.
   
3.  Every Tar or Turpentine Barrel shall be filled
with good, clean, merchantable Tar or Turpentine;
and every Pitch-Barrel, with good true-made merchantable
Pitch.  Ibid.
    4.  Persons knowingly making or setting up, or causing
to be made, &c. any Barrels for Pork, Beef, &c.
of less Size, Gauge, &c. than is directed by this Act,
shall forfeit 2 s. 6 d. Current Money, for every such
Barrel.  Ibid.  §. 3.
    5.  Persons packing Pork or Beef for Sale, in Barrels
made and setup contrary to this Act, or packing
ion any Barrels less Pork or Beef than this Act requires,
as the nett Contents of a Barrel of Beef or Pork, shall
forfeit 10 s. Currency for every such Barrel.  Ibid.
§. 4.
    6.  Persons bartering, selling, or offering to Sale, in
any Manner, Pork or Beef in Barrels made contrary
to this Act in Size, Gauge, &c. or any Barrels of Pork
or Beef less nett COntents than this Act directs,
shall forfeit 10 s. Currency per Barrel.  Ibid.  §. 5.
    7.  Persons bartering, selling, or offering to Sale,
any Tar, Turpentine or Pitch, in Barrels made contrary 
in Size, &c. to this Act, or any Barrels of Pitch,
filled with other than good true-made merchantable
Pitch, or any Barrels of Tar or Turpentine, filled
with other than good merchantable Tar or Turpentine,
shall forfeit for every Barrel of Pitch, 5 s. Currency,

and for every such Barrel of Tar or Turpentine,
2 s. 6 d. Currency.  Ibid.  §. 6.
    8.  Persons importing by Land or Water, any Pork,
Beef, Tar, Turpentine or Pitch, in Barrels of less
nett Contents than directed by this Act, or any Barrels
filled with other than good, merchantable, &c. Tar,
Turpentine or Pitch, and sell, or offer the same to Sale,
&c. within this Province, shall be liable to the respective
Penalties in this Act mentioned, for every such
Barrel so bartered away, sold, &c. contrary to this
Act.  Ibid. §. 7.
    9.  Persons exposing Flour or Bread to Sale, in Barrels
or Casks, without the true Tare of such Barrels or
Casks, marked with Marking-Irons in plain Figures
upon the Bilge, shall, for every such Barrel or Case so
exposed to Sale, forfeit 5 s. Currency.  Ibid.  §. 8.
    10.  All Penalties and Forfeitures, in this Act mentioned,
may be recovered, with Costs, in any County
Court, in the Name of his Lordship and the Informer,
or before a single Magistrate, as the Case may require,
One Half to the County Charge, the other Half to the
Informer, &c.  Ibid.  §. 10.
    11.  Actions on Breaches of this Act shall be brought
within 15 Days after the Offence committed or discovered.
But no Person bartering or selling such Barrels
of Pork, Beef, Pitch, &c. contrary to this Act,
shall be subject to any the Forfeitures before-mentioned,

after the same is received out of his Possession by the
Buyer, and unless such Information be made to some
Magistrate within 10 Days after the Offence committed.

GOLD and SILVER.

    1.  For the Encouragement of Persons bring Gold
and Silver into this Province:  All Persons liable to the
Payment of any Duties, either of Import or Export
whatsoever, by the Laws of this Province (the Duties
payable to the Lord Proprietor, or the Governor, or
appropriated to the College of Virginia, excepted) who
shall discharge the same in Silver or Gold Currency, at
the Rates mentioned in the Act of 1708, ch. 4, with
the Difference of 133 l. 6 s. 8 d. Currency, for every

100 l. Sterling, shall be allowed 15 per Cent out of
the said Duties.  1729, ch. 15, §. 1.
    2.  Every Person claiming the Deduction of 15 per
Cent, shall take an Oath (for which see the Act) before
the Officer appointed to receive the Duties.  And the
Officers allowing the same, before they pass their Accounts,
shall likewise make Oath before One Provincial,
or Two County Justices, that the Sums for which they
crave the Allowance of 15 per Cent in their Accounts,
were bonâ fide paid to them; and that the said Persons
took the Oath before directed, &c. on Certificate
whereof by such Magistrates, the Treasurer shall
allow the said Deduction in their Accounts.  Ibid.
