Colonel William E. Waters and Colonel Peter Leary, Jr.,
aids to Governor Swann; John H. Carter, Secretary of
State; John W. Garrett, Esq., president Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad Company; Hon. Isaac D. Jones, chairman,
and the committee from the State Constitutional Con-
vention; Col. Dorsey, of Barnum's Hotel, and a number of
prominent citizens. Many of those present were accom-
panied by ladies, and the noble steamer backed from the
wharf amid the cheers of the crowd. The scene presented
in going down the harbor was quite animating—the steam-
ers and tugs sounded their whistles, and the shipping dis-
played their flags. A number of the German vessels in
port displayed all their private and speaking signals, and
loud cheers went up from the crews on board the shipping
as well as from the people that lined the wharves as the
steamer bearing the President passed in view.
NEARING ANNAPOLIS.
As the Pentz entered Annapolis roads the President
was honored by a salute from the United States ship
Sabine, lying at anchor just within that haven. All eyes
were now turned towards Annapolis, and as the boat
neared the city the wharves and streets could be seen
lined with people. Flags were flying in every direction,
and as the boat passed in front of the Naval Academy a
national salute was fired from the sloop-of-war Santee,
the flagship of Admiral Porter, and another from the
wharf by the city authorities in honor of the distinguished
visitors. President Johnson and Mr. Seward stood in
front of the main saloon, and both evidently took a deep
interest in the imposing scene presented. The Presi-
dent expressed astonishment at the ease and quickness
with which Captain Kirwan brought his noble boat up to
the wharf, and took occasion to pay a compliment to the
commodore of the Individual Enterprise Line for the ad-
mirable management of his boat.
LANDING AT THE ANCIENT CITY.
Governor Swann had his private coach and splendid
team of horses on board the boat, designed for the special
use of the guests of the State, and they were soon landed.
