So the amendment submitted by Mr. Watkins, of Mont-
gomery, was rejected.
Mr. Ireland submitted the following amendment:
Strike out all from the word " shall," exclusive, in 1st
line, to the word "His," in 5th line, and insert, "be
elected by a joint vote of the two branches of the General
Assembly for four years, and until his successor shall be
elected and qualified."
