LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL
To the Maryland Historical Society:
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN :
This volume of the Provincial Court proceedings 1678-1679, is Volume
LXVIII of the Archives of Maryland and Volume 13 of the sub-series on the
courts. The ninth volume on the Provincial Court, it begins on October 8, 1678
and ends, on October 16, 1679, with the definite end of Liber NN. Like its
predecessors, it was set directly from photostats of the original Iiber in the
Land Office in Annapolis, and it reproduces, as exactly as a good modern press
can do it, the contents of that manuscript book. Since courts and clerks do not
change much in the course of one year, much that was said in previous letters
of transmittal and previous introductions does not need to be repeated here.
This Volume LXVIII begins in the middle of folio 674, Liber NN and ends
with Clerk Painter's notation in the middle of folio 904, the last, "Finis huius
libri."
At the end of the numbered pages of NN there are thirty-five unnumbered
pages: these make up an index of sorts to the cases in the liber. This index
is reproduced at the end of the text under the title "A Contemporary Index."
Volume LXIX, on which work has already been begun, continues the work
of the Provincial Court. It begins on October 7, 1679, and thus overlaps the
end of this Volume LXVIII. It will end April 26, 1681.
Dr. J. Hall Pleasants died in Baltimore on August 24, 1958. The love and
respect he enjoyed in his life—and he did enjoy it—mean that those who knew
him know well what they have lost.
Respectfully submitted,
