that although the Town of Baltimore should be found not so central
as Joppa, it cannot, as we humbly apprehend be an essential objection
of Inconveniency, especially as we have the Example and Experience
of our neighbouring Colonies, and of most of the Countries in the
World to assure us of how little Weight such an Objection has
always been held, when opposed to even much less Advantages than
are above enumerated. ————— Your petitioners therefore humbly
pray Your Excellency and Honours, will be pleased to take the
premises into consideration and pass a Law for Disposing of the
Ground and Materials of the present Court-House and Prison of
this County, and for the Purchasing Ground, and Building a Court-
House and Prison, for the said County, in the Town of Baltimore
aforesaid, for the Courts for the said County to be held in the said
Court-House, and that the same be directed to be made staunch and
convenient, and well constructed against the Danger of Fire, as to
Your Excellency and Honors shall seem meet.
And Your Petitioners will ever pray, &c.
[At the end of this printed petition form are the following tabula-
tions in a contemporary hand, showing the number of signers to each
of the several thirty seven consecutively numbered petitions favoring
removal. These are tied together with contemporary red tape in one
roll. The tabulation gives the number of signers as 2094, but a re-tally
of the somewhat mutilated sheets reduces those that can be now
counted to 2076. These are printed on pages 524-563. This roll
is followed by four other printed petitions favoring removal, forming
a separate series, which show a contemporary tabulation of 177 addi-
tional names. These are printed on pages 563-565. Only 118 sig-
natures can now be counted on these four defective sheets. These
two contemporary tabulations show a total of 2271 favoring removal.
Of these only 2212 sic/natures can now be counted.]
