THE LETTER, DATED JUNE 24, 1768, FROM THE
SPEAKER OF THE LOWER HOUSE OF THE
MARYLAND ASSEMBLY IN REPLY TO
ONE FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
ON THE TOWNSHEND ACTS
[THIS LETTER FROM ROBERT LLOYD, SPEAKER OF THE
LOWER HOUSE OF THE MARYLAND ASSEMBLY TO THOMAS
CUSHING, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
OF MASSACHUSETTS, DATED JUNE 24, 1768, WAS WRITTEN
UNDER ORDERS FROM THE MARYLAND HOUSE IN REPLY TO
THE CIRCULAR LETTER FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS HOUSE
ADDRESSED TO THE LOWER HOUSES OF THE SEVERAL COL-
ONIES, SUGGESTING THAT THEY CONSULT AS TO THE BEST
STEPS TO TAKE "TO HARMONIZE" THEIR PROTESTS AGAINST
THE RECENTLY ENACTED TOWNSHEND ACTS, TAXING TEA,
GLASS, PAPER, AND PAINTERS' COLORS BROUGHT INTO THE
COLONIES. ORDERS WERE ISSUED BY GEORGE III TO THE
SEVERAL GOVERNORS, DIRECTING THEM TO PREVENT ANY
NOTICE BEING TAKEN OF THIS COMMUNICATION AND TO
DISSOLVE IMMEDIATELY ANY ASSEMBLY WHICH SHOULD
ATTEMPT TO DO SO. THE MARYLAND LOWER HOUSE
EVADED THE COMMANDS OF THE KlNG TO THE GOVERNOR
AS TO DISSOLUTION BY ADOPTING JUST BEFORE ADJOURN-
MENT A PETITION OF PROTEST TO THE KlNG, AND BY
DIRECTING ITS SPEAKER TO REPLY TO THE MASSACHU-
SETTS HOUSE, EXPRESSING ITS APPROVAL OF THE ACTIONS
WHICH THIS COLONY HAD TAKEN. THIS LETTER, DATED
AFTER ADJOURNMENT, DOES NOT APPEAR ENTERED IN
THE JOURNAL OF THE LOWER HOUSE, BUT WAS PRINTED
IN THE JULY 28, 1768 ISSUE OF THE ANNAPOLIS Gazette,
FROM WHICH IT IS REPRINTED HERE. SEE PAGES lix-lxiii,

To the Honourable Thomas Cushing, Esq; Speaker of the Hon-
ourable House of Representatives of Massachusetts-Bay.
Sir,
I had the Honour to receive your Favour of the nth of February
last, and on a Meeting of our Assembly, I communicated it to our
House, and I am desired to assure you, they acknowledge themselves
obliged, by a candid and free Communication of Sentiments of a
Sister Colony, on a Point so interesting to the whole; and that their
Opinion of the Consequences to the Colonies, of the Operation of
the several Acts of Parliament you allude to, coincide exactly with
