[THIS UNDATED PETITION FROM SUNDRY INHABITANTS
OF ST. PAUL'S PARISH, BALTIMORE COUNTY, SOUGHT
LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY TO IMPOSE A TAX OF 8 POUNDS
OF TOBACCO ON THE TAXABLE INHABITANTS OF THE
PARISH TO HIRE AN ORGANIST TO PLAY "THE VERY GOOD
ORGAN" AT ST. PAUL'S CHURCH. ALTHOUGH ADDRESSED
TO GOVERNOR SHARPE AND BOTH HOUSES OF THE AS-
SEMBLY, IT APPARENTLY WAS NEVER PRESENTED IN
EITHER HOUSE. FROM AN ANALYSIS OF THE SIGNERS IT IS

To His Excellency Horatio Sharpe Esq.r Governor and Com-
mander In Chief in and over the Province of Maryland and To the
Honourable The Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly.
The Petition of sundry the Inhabitants of St Pauls Parrish
in Baltimore County in Behalf of Themselves and others Humbly
sheweth
That having a very good Organ in their church and the Annual
Assessment being seldom sufficient for the other Parochial charges
they desire An act may pass for the Levying a sum not exceeding
three Pounds of Tobacco P.r Poll Yearly for Hiring an Organist
to Play the same.
And your Petitioners as in Duty bound shall Ever Pray
