that doth not appear to such Court to be of ill Fame to grant License
in the Words following Viz.t "License is hereby granted by

County Court unto "A. B. to travel and trade as a Hawker Pedlar and
Petty Chapman within the Province of Maryland for the Space and
Term of One Year to commence from the Date hereof he behaving
himself well." Which License shall be Attested by the Clerk of such
Court under his Hand and the Seal of the said Court for which

License or Renewal thereof such Pedlar Hawker or Petty Chapman
shall pay the sum of four Pounds Current Money to the Sheriff of
that County and also the sum of four shillings Current Money to the
Clerk of such Court for his fee for making out or renewing such
License and making out and transmitting the Lists hereafter men-
tioned

[In case of
Failure, and
found Trav-
eling with
Goods for
sale, to for-
feit 20 l.]

And be it likewise Enacted That in Case any Hawker Pedlar or
Petty Chapman shall after the Time aforesaid be found Travelling
with or exposing or Offering Goods for Sale within this Province
without first applying for and obtaining a License for that Purpose
according to the Intent and Directions of this Act such Hawker
Pedlar or Petty Chapman shall forfeit and pay the sum of Twenty
Pounds Current Money

son, but
particularly
Sheriffs &c.
impowered
to examine
Persons
dealing as a
Petty Chap-
man, and
require them
to produce a
License, and
in Case of
Refusal, to
carry them
before a
Magistrate

&c.]

And be it likewise Enacted that any Person but more Particularly
the High Sheriffs Deputy Sheriffs and Constables within this Prov-
ince shall and may and they and every of them are hereby directed
and impowered to examine any Person who they shall find Hawking
Pedling or dealing as a Petty Chapman and require him or her to
produce his or her License and in Case of refusal or neglect of such
Pedlar Hawker or Petty Chapman to produce the same to carry such
Pedlar Hawker or Petty Chapman before any Justice of the Peace
and such Justice is hereby impowered and directed to bind over such
Hawker Pedlar or Petty Chapman to the next County Court there
to be dealt with according to Law unless he or she shall then produce
such License And if such License shall be then produced having been
obstinately refused before such Justice shall award Judgment against
such Hawker Pedlar or Petty Chapman to pay the Person or Persons
so bringing him or her before such Justice the sum of sixteen shillings
Current Money as a satisfaction for his her or their Trouble before
such Justice shall discharge such Hawker Pedlar or Petty Chapman
so brought before him

[Proviso]

Provided always that Persons travelling with Linnen of the
Growth and Manufacture of this Province and selling or bartering
the same or any kind of Provision or Hemp Flax Thread or Yarn

of the Growth or Manufacture of this or any other place shall not in
respect of such Linnen Provision Hemp Flax Thread or Yarn only
be deemed or held as Hawkers Pedlars Petty Chapmen within this
Act any thing herein to the Contrary notwithstanding
