On motion leave given to bring in a bill entitled an act for the
security of purchasers and others, being protestants, claiming by or
from aliens. Ordered that M.r Chase, M.r Jennings, and M.r Cresap,
do prepare and bring in the same.
On motion, M.r Johnson, M.r Hollyday, M.r Hall, M.r Chase,
M.r Jennings, M.r Wilson, M.r Hayward M.r Bordley, M.r N.
Thomas, M.r Paca, and M.r Ringgold are appointed a committee
to consider that part of his excellencys speech, relative to the crim-
inal laws, and report their sense thereon, to the house.
On reading the second time the bill entitled an act for the re-
covery of certain amerciaments and also upon defaults on execu-
tions ; the question was put, whether the following clause be added
viz.t "Provided always that in all actions of trespass upon the case,
where no declaration shall be sent with the writ, expressing the
true cause of action, the sheriff or coroner shall not be amerced
upon such writ above the sum of eight thousand pounds of tobacco;
and that the judgment for such amerciament shall be absolute with-
out any assignment of the cause of action to be offered or tendered
to the said sheriff or coroner ?" Resolved in the affirmative.
