to the parish of St. Margaret's, Westminster, Anne Arundel County, were
presented at the 1763 Assembly. In one petition the parishioners asked authority
to build a chapel in the upper part of that parish, and in the other they asked
authority to sell the parish glebe and one hundred and fifty acres, part of the
tract, "Whitehall", belonging to the parish. No action seems to have been
taken upon the first petition for the erection of a chapel (p. 237). The petition
asking authority to sell the glebe land of one hundred and fifty acres, part of
the tract "Whitehall", received favorable consideration, however, and an act
to that end was passed. This act declares that "Whitehall", located at the
extreme boundary of the parish, at a place called Sandy Point, was very incon-
veniently located, and authority was given to sell the glebe land at a figure of
not less than £300 sterling, and to use the money for the purchase of a glebe
more centrally located in the parish (pp. 256, 373, 376, 288, 498-499).

SCHOOLS

There had been passed in 1723 an act providing for the erection and main-
tenance of a school in each of the several counties of the Province, and a board
of visitors to conduct these had been appointed in each county under it for
this purpose (Arch. Md. XXXIV; 740-746). Funds for the support of the
schools had been provided for in various early and subsequent acts setting
aside certain import and export duties and fines for this purpose, to be divided
equally among the twelve counties into which the Province was then divided.
Since this act had been passed in 1723, two new counties had been established,
and at the 1763 session acts were passed for the establishment of schools in
Worcester and Frederick counties.

In the case of Worcester County, which had been cut out of Somerset in
the year 1742, the Assembly in 1746 passed an act establishing a county school
in Worcester, appointing visitors for its management, and providing that its
share be a thirteenth part of the money received by the Province for the use
of the county schools. By a vote of 35 to 5 the Lower House on November 2,
1763, passed a bill to establish a county school in Worcester County (p. 353),
which was assented to by the Upper House, and became a law. The Assembly
in 1746, however, had passed an act for establishing a county school in Worces-
ter, appointed visitors for its management, and provided that its share be one-
thirteenth part of the money received by the Province for the use of its county
schools (Arch. Md. LXIV; 416-417). The act of 1763 [No. XVI] provided
that the visitors of the Somerset County School pay over to the visitors of the
Worcester County School hereby established, one-half of the funds that had
been in their possession at the time of the division of the counties in 1742.
The visitors of the new school were directed to purchase four lots in Snow
Hill Town, instead of the one hundred acres provided in the general act of
1723, and to erect a school upon them. From this it is not clear whether the
visitors appointed under the act of 1746 had failed to comply with its provisions,
or whether the location was unsatisfactory and their successors were given
authority under the act of 1763 to move the school to a new location at Snow
Hill (pp. 431.433)-
