LETTER DATED MAY 13, 1762, FROM GOV. SHARPE TO
THE NAVAL OFFICER OF PATUXENT
[THIS LETTER FROM GOV. SHARPE TO THE NAVAL
OFFICER OF PATUXENT DISTRICT, DATED MAY 13, 1762,
IS A CIRCULAR LETTER SENT TO ALL THE OFFICERS OF THE
CUSTOMS OF THE PROVINCE AS THE RESULT OF A WARNING
RECEIVED BY SHARPE FROM SlR JEFFREY AMHERST, THE
BRITISH COMMANDER IN CHIEF FOR AMERICA, THAT THE
ACT OF GEORGE II WAS BEING VIOLATED WHICH PRO-
HIBITED GRAIN AND OTHER PROVISIONS BEING SHIPPED
FROM THE AMERICAN COLONIES, EXCEPT TO GREAT BRIT-
AIN AND ITS DEPENDENCIES, TO PREVENT THEIR REACH-
ING THE ENEMY (Arch. Md. XXX, pp. 36-37). IT IS TO BE
NOTED THAT JOHN ROSS, CLERK OF THE COUNCIL AND
UPPER HOUSE, HAD BEEN APPOINTED NAVAL OFFICER OF
THIS DISTRICT FOLLOWING THE MISAPPROPRIATION OF
FUNDS IN 1761 BY HENRY DARNALL, THE FORMER NAVAL
OFFICER.]

His Excellency S.r Jeffery Amherst Commander in Chief of all
the Kings Forces on this Continent having informed me that from
several Papers which have fallen into his hands he has undoubted
Proofs of the Enemy's having been supplied with Provisions from
almost every Port in North America I think it my Duty to advise
you of the Information His Majesty's General hath given me & tho
I flatter myself that no such infamous Trade hath been carried on
from your District & that I need not remind you how much it is your
Duty to prevent it I must recommend it to you in the most earnest
manner strictly to observe & Carry into Execution [the Act] of
Parliament that was made in the of His late Maj-
esty's Reign entituled An Act to prohibit for a limitted time the
Exportation of Corn Grain Meal Malt Flour Bread Biscuit Starch
Beef Pork Bacon & other Victual (except Fish & Roots & Rice to
be exported to any part of Europe southward of Cape Finisterre)
from his Majesty's Colonies & Plantations in America unless to
Great Britain or Ireland or to some of the said Colonies & Planta-
tions &c & in Case you have reason to suspect that any Vessel loaden
