Yours of the 5th we did not receive 'til this Day. We have no Ap-
plication for a Change of Magistrates in your County, no [r] has any
Alteration taken Place in the late Commission, excepting such as
were dead, or did not qualify, who were left out and an Addition of
three put in Place of them. It is not the Practice of the Board to
remove any Magistrate, unless he does not qualify, or an Hearing

[Council to Commodore Grason]

We have undoubted Information that a Sloop or Schooner belong-
ing to the Enemy, with two or three small Whale Boats, have done
considerable Mischief about the Mouth of Potowmack, and have
taken several small Craft higher up, as well as lower down the Bay.
We wish you therefore, to proceed without Delay to Miles River
and have the Barges put into proper Condition to cruize against
these Vessels. You will judge from the Intelligence you will receive,
whether it will be necessary to fit out the Whole of the Barges. We
have furnished you with £300. on Account, to defray the necessary
Expences in fitting out, and to engage Men enough, on the best
Terms in your Power, to make out the Number you will want, cal-
culating upon getting 40 here which General Smallwood will furnish.
When we hear that you are in Readiness for the Enterprize, we will
give you further Instructions.
