Liber No. 78
p. 315

[Council to Mr Benjamin Griffith.]

We have this Day received Information that you are seizing Cattle
from the Inhabitants, under Instructions given you some Time ago,
which not a little surprizes us, when you collected so few, at the Time
the Demands for the Army acting in Virginia were so pressing.
We hereby direct you not to seize any more Provisions under those
Instructions. You are to return us an Account of the Number seized
and in what Manner they have been disposed of, which we request
may be done without Delay.

[Council to Colo Thomas Price.]

We have made a Contract with Colo Moses Rawlings for 600
Barrels of Flour, manufactured under the late Law, and all the live
Cattle and Beef salted in Bulk, under your Care, to be delivered at
Frederick Town; you will therefore appoint two reputable, skilful
and judicious Persons to estimate the weight of the Cattle, standing
and you will take an Account of the Number, and Weight of each
and the Quantity of Salt used in curing, what you have in Bulk, the
Weight of each Barrel of Flour and then deliver the same to Colo
Rawlings, and transmit a particular Account thereof to us. Colo
Rawlings is to return the Barrels to you in good Order, which you
will have sent to the several Millers within your District.

[Council to Colo Thomas Price.]

Colo Rawlings informs the Board that you have a Quantity of
public Salt in your Hands, more than sufficient for present Demands,
and as he has contracted with the Board for the Beef in your Posses-
sion, which he says will require salting immediately, we request you
to let him have what you can spare, he having engaged to return it to
you, whenever you may want it. We wrote you yesterday to appoint
two Gentlemen to estimate the Weight of the Beef on Foot, on Con-
sideration, we think Colo Rawlings ought to have the Appointment
of one; we therefore desire you to let one be of his appointing
