[Council to Commodore Grason]
A French Brig of 16 Guns, chased up the Bay a Privateer Sloop
of eight Guns, only, four Days from New York, but lost Sight of
her this Morning 3 o'Clock off Poplar Island. It is uncertain whether
the Sloop continued her Course up the Bay, run into the Eastern Bay,
or tacked downwards but the Brig came up and is now opposite to
this Place, standing downwards. A Prize the Sloop had taken, was
retaken by the Brig, the People on Board of which gave Information
that the Sloop came in with two Barges which went up Patowmack.

|
Under these Circumstances, apprehensive that you have not yet got
Men enough to fit out three Barges, and being very desirous that
the two Barges up Patowmack should pay for their Temerity; We
send over Capt. Baques, who will accommodate himself to your
Commands, with 30 Men, and we wish you, without the least Delay,
to proceed in the Barges to the Mouth of Patowmack and take every
Step Prudence may suggest, to capture these Vessels of the Enemy.
