Council of Maryland, 1781-1782. 107

Mortification, all this Mischief is done by a very inconsiderable
Force. We dispatch this Letter by Express, in the flattering Expecta-
tion that it will be in your Power, as we know it will be your Incli-
nation, to take effectual Measures to strip this contemptible Enemy
of their Plunder, and punish them for their Temerity. The State
of Maryland has several Barges, which would probably have been
quite equal to the Defence of the Bay, against the present Force of
the Enemy, but unfortunately, they have been laid up, almost ever
since the Reduction of York, and are not now in Condition for a
Cruize, for we did not imagine the Enemy would dare to shew them-
selves higher up the Bay, while any of the Ships of his Most Chris-
tian Majesty were stationed at York.
