think answer the intention fully she is now so forward that she
might be finished in all next Month, and has the Appearance of an
exceeding fast Sailor her Dimensions are about 72 feet by the Keel
strait rabbit 26 feet by the beam 12 feet 4 Inches in the Hold & 4 feet
waist amidship, she is pierced for 22 Guns, tho intended to carry only
20 on her main Deck
If your Excellcy & Council should think this Ship woud answer the
purpose for which Vessels are wanted I woud dispose of her on
moderate terms she is stout strong & well built and will bear the
examination of any who are Judges of Vessels
Be pleased so to acquaint me with your Determination in matter
as early as you can and any answer that may be necessary thereto
shall be immediately returned

Tucker Who is the father to James Tucker Mast, of the Brig Katy
and now a Prisoner on board of one of the Ennemys Ships of War
at Portsmouth I hope your Honors have Considerd the matter to
have him Exchangd for the Mate of the Katy now lying In Jale at
Baltimore town I think thare is now a flag of truce lying at baltimore

Your Excellency will receive enclosed the Extract of a resolve of
the 23d Instant, requesting the State of Maryland to advance to
Lt Colonel Forrest, an Account of the United States a Sum equal
to seven years half pay of a Lieut Colonel, in Lieu of the half pay
he might otherwise have been entitled to during his natural Life.
Upon the resignation of this Officer, Congress have thought
proper, in Consideration of his past Services, & particular Misfor-
tune of the Loss of a Limb in the public Service, to grant him the
Benefit & Emoluments contained in the enclosed resolution

[W. Smallwood, Charles County, to Gov. Lee.]

Yesterday I received a letter from Baron Steuben inclosing a copy
of one from Genl Green to him, copies of which you have inclosed,
these I have thought necessary to transmit, that you might see the
expediency of ordering the most speedy and vigorous exertions to
be adopted in raising and forwarding the Troops to be levied in this
State to fill our Quota.
The matter has now become serious and alarming the Carolina's if
not subjugated are over Run. Our Stores and resources in that
Quarter much exhausted indeed ere this probably in the Enemy's
possession and unless Virginia & Maryland emerge from their
