January 1-December 31, 1781 83

[Jas. Calhoun, Baltimore, to Gov. Lee]

Inclosed is Extract of Lt Colo Howards Letter to me which he
seems to have wrote in a hurry and is not so particular as I could
wish but it serves to inform us where the armies are. Guilford Court-
house is about 50 Miles from Hilsborough on the road to Salsbury.
Colo Howard has also wrote to Mr Lux perhaps more particular but
as I am just got to Town have not seen that letter if it contains any-
thing material shall do myself the honor to communicate it to your
Excellency p first oppertunity

Guilford Court House Feb. 10th 1781

Lord Cornwallis has followed us close as far as this place (200
Miles) where we joined Genl Greenes Army. His Lordship has been
disappointed in one object which was the recovery of the Prisoners
who are now safe in Virginia. He has crossed the Yadkin. I wish
we were stronger than we are. A number of the Militia turns out but
they cant be depended on as they come and go when they please
Marian has penetrated South Carolina as far as Dorchester within
20 Miles of Charles Town and taken some Prisoners and destroyed a
great many stores. I still retain my command in the Light Infantry
which Corps has been reinforced with Lt Col. Lee's Legion and about
80 Riflemen. Colo Williams commands it during the illness of Genl
Morgan

[Nath'l Ramsey, Annapolis to the Council.]

Since my arrival at this place I learn that by the resignation of
Mr Pecca, [Paca] it is become necessary to appoint some other per-
son to act as a commissioner for the confiscated estates. It is with
the greatest deffidence that I presume to offer my service in an office
of so much importance, and can only say, that should I be honored
with the appointment, I will make it my study to deserve it.
I am at present in a particular manner induced to make this appli-
cation inasmuch as some two officers of my rank must now retire,
and from the best information I can get, none of the Gentlemen who
Command Regiments wish to quit the Service This alone has in-
duced me voluntarily to offer myself as one of the Supernumeries,
as I will thereby in all probability, leave in the service a better officer.
And being entirely disengaged from every kind of business, I will
have it in my power to devote the whole of my time to the duties of
the office which I now solicit

[John Smith Brookes to The Honble The Governor & Council]

I wrote you a few days agoe by Mr Tho. Williams, representing
