558 Letters to the Governor and Council

26]

[Petition of John Dicars private in the 39th Batn of Frederick
County commanded by Coll James Johnson Esqr To his Ex-
cellency the Governor and Honourable Council]

Humbly sheweth, That Petitioner is one of the unhappy number
of those men who is fined in the sum of Twenty pounds for not
marching with the militia last June. That Petitioner at the Time
of Receiving Orders was not in health having about 2 years ago
fell from the Barn of Mr Adam Devilbess which Occasion'd him to
keep his Bed five months and at certain times afflicts him very
severely — That Pettr has Enrolled ever attended Muster and taken
the Oath of Fidility to the States, and agreeably comply'd with the
Laws of his Country, as near as his narrow circumstances wou'd
admit. And confides in his Excellency and honourable the Council
upon taking the unhappy case of Poor Petr into your serious Con-
sideration will have the fine Remitted, As the contrary will prove ruin
of a poor helpless charge, having no other support than the depen-
dance of Pet" Daily Labour.
Your honours kind interposition will not only Taken as one of
the greatest favours but Petr As in Duty bound will ever pray

[Jas Calhoun, Baltimore to the Governor & Council]

The bearer of this Mr John Roberts of Frederick County is by
Trade a Tanner and has been well recommended to me. He waits
on Your Excellency & the Honble Council respecting the Hides of
the Cattle Slaughtered at Frederick Town which he is desireous
either to purchase or Tan for the State I believe him to be a Person
worthy employment should it be thought most eligable to have them
Tanned and I am informed he can give proper security for any bar-
gain he may make.

Mr David Craufurd has committed to my Goal a man by the
Name of Jno Conway who was Impeached by a Mr Handy. I
hope your Excellency & the Hono Council will be pleaStd to say what
I am to do with him as its said he does not come under the predecimt
of a Prisoner of War — But a Spy.
