[Jas. Calhoun, Baltimore, to the Council.]
Inclosed is Copy of a Letter I recd from the Quarter Master at this
Post. I have wrote him for answer that it was totally out of my
power to comply with his requisition at this time as I had not any
Forage belonging to the State in my possession nor the means of
procuring it but that I would lay his application before Your Honble
Board.
There is very little grain comes here nor for Sale owing I believe
to our Vessels being kept down the Bay and what does come cannot
be bought for Paper Money nor indeed any other article.

As there is an immediate want of a large Quantity of Forage at
this Post for the use of the Teams and Riding Horses belonging to
the Continental Army now on their way from York in Virginia to

Quantities as from time to time may be wanting to supply this Post
therefore must request you if Possible to Furnish me with one Hun-
dred Ton of Hay and one Thousand Bushels of Corn and Oates or
other Grain equivalent for the above mentioned purpose. Should
it be out of your Power to Comply with this request either in part
or whole, I beg that you may give me your Reasons in writing so
that I may be Justifiable in Purchasing or doing otherwise as the
case may be
