502 Letters to the Governor and Council

Walley the barge which I sold Council, And put on board, Capt
Parkers Schooner Fifty six Barrels of pork and Colo Challie has sent
up the remainder in Mr James Handys Schooner from Worcester.
The £500 Cash which I recd from the treasurer of the Western Shore
for the Comry of Worcester I forwarded to Colo Challie with the
letter recd from Council immediately on my return home from An-
napolis, And as I found Mr McBryde disposed to Act as Comry in
Somt Delivd him the 500£ which was deposited in my hands to pur-
chase pork with in this county, I have this day consulted Capt. Walley
on the dementions of the new barge Capt. Robt Dashiell has pro-
vided the materials workman &c and will finish her in a short time.

I recd a verbal message by my brother James Howard that you are
in want of a quantity of spades, Shovels, and pick axes to be delivered
you in a few days. I have not any of those articles by me, but shall
be able to supply a considerable quantity by the last of the week
between Saturday night & Monday Morning; if you can wait so long ;
if not, I can supply with a number sooner; though if you can wait
'till the time mentioned the supply may be several hundreds. Please
to inform me what number you want of each kind by the young man
Mr Dennis Spurrier; Had I known of this a few weeks before, I
could have supply'd you wth thousands; and if hereafter such articles
shall be wanting, on your giving timely notice any quantity may be
had of me. I have sent you the petitions of the inhabitants of Mont-
gomery & Anne Arundel County respectg the negroes condemned in
Montgomery County relative to their conspiring & attempting to
poison Mr John B. Howard. I flatter myself the sentence pasStd by
the Court in conformity to the verdict of the jury will be put in exe-
cution. I hope, I shall receive an answer relative to the Spades &c
instantly, by wch my conduct will be regulated

[Jno. Ross Key, Pipe Creek, Fred'k County, to Gov. Lee.]
I have been requested to sollicit your Excellency and the Council,
in Behalf of the Bearer John Lainey and Fredk Clabaugh, two repu-
table Honest Farmers who live in my Neighbourhood, that your
Excellency and the Council may condescend to direct and assist them
by your Intercession to recover their Waggons and Horses that have
been lately impressed into the Service of the State of Virginia.
The Waggons had been employed to take Loads from Philadel-
phia to Stemtown in Virginia upon their Return they were taken
from them by a Quarter Master of the State of Virginia, and as Your
Excellency will find by the Certificates herewith presented, for the
use and Benefit of that State not for the Service of the Continent or
the Continental Army.
