428 Letters to the Governor and Council

August 18

[Matt. Ridley, Baltimore, to His Excellency the Governor.]

I have the honor to forward you two letters from the Super In-
tendant of Finance relative to two thousand Barrels of Flour to be
provided by this State.
My Instructions are to receive the Flour into proper stores pro-
vided for the purpose and to be carefull as to the quality & Condi-
tion; on which a report is to be made. This will make the Inspection
of the whole necessary.
I am further instructed to advise when the Flour can be delivered —
(The 24th Cur. is the time limited to me) and if the whole is ready.
For the purpose of speedily informing Mr Morris on these Heads
I send the letters by express & beg to be favored with your Excel-
lency's Orders.

August 19

[James Hendricks, Alexandria, to Gov. Lee.]

I received the anex'd from Majr Washington one of the Marquis
La Fayette's Aids which occasions me to trouble your Excellency on
this occasion.
The Cartridge Boxes the Majr Mentions are much wanted below,
I will therefore thank you to inform me who is to be apply'd to for
them and I will send over for them; as I conduct the Quartermaster's
department in this Vicinity, I conceive the person who hath them will
find no inconsistency in delivering to me.

Dear Sr There is a considerable number of Cartridge Boxes the
property of this State in Annapolis, I wish you contrive some means
of getting them over as we are in much want of them, Governor Lee
will be good enough to inform you who is to be apply'd to for them.

[Charles Blake, Corsica, to Colo. H. Hollingsworth.]

By Capt. Barrington I send 154 Barrels of flour all that is made ;
I have (as the Millers inform me) no to make which the want of
water has prevented being made, they say it shall be done in two
weeks, the Invoice of the flour by mistake has been sent to Mr Bruff
to whom 63 Barrels of the above belongs as you'l see by the marks,
the collection of wheat will begin in a few days, there will be a great
deal collected; I wish you would instruct me to send what is collected
in the granarys on Chester to Elk as soon as Collected, as I have no
Cash to have it waggoned to the Mills, which are 12 Miles distant and
if I had would be double the expence of sending it in wheat to Elk.
I am happy in having this ready to answer your call, and every exer-
tion in my power shall at all times be made to serve the Public
