[W. Smallwood, Annapolis, to The Honorble, The President of
the Council]
As I shall probably remain in Maryland during the present sum-
mer to arrange and forward the Troops as they are raised, I should
be glad that the Sale of the two Negroe women, the Property of the
late Mrs Tasker might be suspended, provided it would not be pro-
ductive of much Inconvenience to or materially interfere with the
Views of the State.
Their Services will not only be valuable to me, but will in some
measure promote the good of the Service as they will supply the
Place of Soldiers — who other ways must be necessarily employed in
my Kitchen.

[Stephen Steward to the Council.]
I had ocation to write to Mr J. Chase yesterday who I thought was
In Counsell and would Present my letter to him to the Counsell his
being out of town obliges me to send to you again as I Dont Chuse
to Prosied with the States Part of the Porpass Cargo without your
Petickuler Instructions. I have your two letters of 21 Inst agree-
able to your Requst I shall go up to baltimore and Inspect Into the
Gallic as fare as I Can and will make a Report to you I shall Call on
you as I go up Prohaps a friday as to the Porpass Cargo Prohaps
you may not be a Quanted with the Place and Contrey whare she lys
or you would not Give me such Instructions as you have the Ship
lys between Cap Inlopen light House and Indian River If she lys
whare I think she Dus the Nearest harbor is lewes town which is
fifteen miles your shurest will be to Cart them as they Cant be taken
off on the Se Cost there the Expence and Resque of carting them to
Wilmington and then to Anapolis the hole Expense will be grat as
Inshurance will be at best 12 1/2 to 15 p Ct the way Inland at Present
to many the oners Part of the Cargo is to have it wagoned over to
the Head of grat Choptank whare thare is Good Navegation and
good Houses to Put it In — from whare the Sloop lys to Choptank
Bridge is 40 Miles think I am well a Quainted with the Rode but am
not so well a Quanted with the Distance I shall send over Capt James
Belt to Capt Weems asistance who is an abel good man I shall De-
pend on his Judgment weather to send our Part by water to Wil-
mington or through it to Choptank Bridg I must beg your amedit
answer as Capt Jeams belt is now hear waiting till I hear from you
the Dollers [dollies?] I shall have Carted to Kent Island.
