[Richd Barnes, Leod Town to His Excellency Thos Sim Lee, Esqr]

By the last law for raising Troops for three years, I passed two,
one of which I sent up to you. The other was a considerable time
before he could git his pay from the Class, I have repeatedly or-
dered him here, to proceed to Annapolis, and informed him that he
would receive his cloathes there, without its being in my power to
git him to go. Agreeable to Law I could not oblige him before he had
recd his cloathes, and did intend to send him with the Militia, How-
ever he has put it out of my power by going in a Brig of Igna Cray-
crofts that left this a few days past bound to Alexandrea, where he
may be secured if you think proper to desire some Person there to
have it done, His name is Henry Brian passed as a Substitute for
three Years the 3d Apl 1781

[Pat Sim Smith, Calvert County, to Gov. Lee.]

I have received the Instructions to suspend the Collection of part
of the Horses directed by Act of Assembly, which has saved me
much Trouble It would have been very difficult to procure the whole
number there being so few non juror s in the County — only two who
had Horses worth taking and good Horses at this time very scarce
