262 Letters to the Governor and Council

[John Collins to His Excelency Thos Sims Lee Esq. Governor
of Maryland]

Whereas I have Served five years in the Pensylvania Line and was
Lawfuly Discharged in trintowne and after that was Inlisted by
Mr Chester three months since for the Maryland Line and was taken
up as a Deserter and was confined in hartford County after which
Sarjent Dugan made oath that I was Lawfully Discharged from
the Line but I had twelve hundred and od pounds which Mr Chester
paid for me out of my Bounty

[Proposals from Capt. Thomas Hunger ford to the Governor and
Councel of the State of Maryland to hire his schooner Sally
for such services as they shall direct]

The Schooner to be fitted at the Expence of the State and to be
kept in good repair as well the Hull Rigging and Sails, and to be
returned in as good order as at the time she first enterd into the
service, the State paying to Thomas Hungerford or his order for
hire of the said Vessel, at the rate of one dollar specie p day.
In case the said Schooner should be taken by the Enemy or other-
wise lost or destroyd during the time she is in the Service of the
state, the state shall pay to said Thomas Hungerford or his order
seventy five pounds specie for the said Vessell and all such sums as
may be due for hire or otherwise at the time she is taken lost or
destroyed.
The schooner to be victuald and Mand at the Expence of the State,
and the Owners to be at no expence whatever on account of the said
Vessell.
The State may keep the Vessell in their Service as long as they
think proper. Thomas Hungerford to be allow'd as Commander of
the said Vessell at the rate of fifteen shillings specie p day, and to be
paid all legal charges and expence she may be put to on account of
the state. And in case the said Hungerford should be taken Prisoner
to be allowed his pay until he is exchang'd.
The Vessell to be fitted out and man'd agreeable to the order and
direction of the Governor and Council or such Person or Persons
as they shall appoint.
The Governor and Council to pay the hire and Wages of the said
Vessell every three months, And all expences Capt Hungerford may
be oblig'd to advance and pay on account of the State whenever the
said Hungerford shall demand the same with any depreciation that
may be due on Money advanced until he receives payment
