fixed — or at the rait difference between hard Money and State Bills

[Hercules Courtenay, Baltimore, To His Excellency the Governor
& Council of Maryland.]

Some days being now past since payment for the Cloths & Stock-
ings sold you for the use of the State shd be made; therefore thought
proper to remind you thereof & to request the favour of a line from
you to Advise What day I shd Waite on you for payment as above,
particularly as Money Daily Depreciates & I wd not Wish the fault to
lay with me, in not Calling on you in proper time & also that I wd not
wish to Incur the expence of a second Journey to Annapolis on that
business.

I am directed by General Greene to proceed to the Delaware State,
and from thence to Philadelphia on public business but as my private
Stock of Cash is entirely exhausted I have been oblig'd to come thus
far out of my way to solicit your Assistance.
I am Informd that the state of your Treasury will not admit of a
supply of money for my Expences I must therefore request the favor
of Your Excellency and Council to direct the continental Treasurer
to advance me about £25 specie or the value thereof to enable me to
comply with the Generals Orders which are of much importance

[Richard Smyth and Sam. Blunt to Mr Mure, Annapolis.]

I shuld be glad if you Will uze your Intrust With his Excel-
ency or the Comseary of the Cyty or State of Maryland to give Me
a Lod of the States Tobaco as I am Laing at Mr Blunts Warehouse
and am Ready to take of a Lode of about Thirty hogsheads In the
Skuner Portomoke Belonging to Baltimore and if you will Be so
kind to send me the Nots over to Mr Rolings With My orders I Will
Execute them as sune as Posable from your Humbil Searvent

P. S. I think the Tobacco in my Ware house now lies at the Mercy
of the Enemy, and as Mr Smyth wants a freight and there is a large
Quantity of Tobacco in the house the Property of the State of Mary-
land it would be Better for him to take a loade of it to a place of more
